Handsome Furs - “Handsome Furs Hate This City”
The last time I saw Handsome Furs play, Dan Boeckner politely told the crowd, who responded with predictably boisterous applause, that this song was about Toronto. The lie was nice, but any real Vancouverite wouldn’t be offended to know that it’s actually about Vancouver (when I interviewed him he said as much… and also that he never admits that here though). I mean, the title says hate, but anyone who lives here knows there’s love in that statement.
I think Only Magazine may have said it best years back (and I may be paraphrasing slightly): you have to hate Vancouver to truly know how to love it, and we really hate it.
With that in mind, I can’t think of a better song to say, happy 125th birthday and fuck you, Vancouver.
